Faulting/Settlement

Faulting is the difference in elevation across a joint. Some common causes of faulting are: settlement because of soft foundation, pumping or eroding of material from under the slab, or curling of the slab edges due to temperature and moisture changes. Severity levels are defined by the difference in elevation across the joint as indicated in the following table.

Severity Difference of Elevation
Low 1/8 to 3/8 in (3 to 10 mm)
Medium 3/8 to 3/4 in (10 to 20 mm)
High > 3/4 in (> 20 mm)
